About Professor Bengt Sundén:

Bengt Sundén was born on the 5th September 1949. He graduated as a M. Sc. in Mechanical Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden in 1973 and presented his PhD-thesis in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics in 1979 at Chalmers University. In 1980 he was appointed Docent (the highest academic degree in Sweden) and held positions there as Research Associate, Docent and University lecturer. In 1992 he was appointed Professor of Heat Transfer at Lund University, Lund, Sweden. Since 1995 he serves as the Head of the Department of Energy Sciences.

Professor Sundén has been teaching undergraduate courses in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Basic Fluid Mechanics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Numerical Heat Transfer. He has taught graduate courses in Heat Transfer, Heat and Mass Transfer, Convective Boiling and Condensation, Numerical Flow Simulation, Thermal Radiation, Momentum, Mass and Heat Transfer in Combustion Processes. He has supervised more than 170 M.Sc. theses, many of them in cooperation with industries. He has also taught a number of in-house courses for some companies.

The current research topics are: Enhancement of heat transfer in compact heat exchangers, e.g. radiators, oil coolers; computational methods of convective flow and heat transfer (CFD) in complex narrow geometries, e.g. cooling of combustor walls, blade and vane cooling, recuperators and intercoolers in gas turbine systems; combustion–related heat transfer including thermal radiation, gas turbine heat transfer (impinging jets, film cooling, ribbed ducts), evaporation and condensation in plate heat exchangers, thermal imaging techniques, PIV, heat exchanger networks (process integration), multiscale and multiphysics transport phenomena in fuel cells.

The publication list includes about 500 papers in well-recognised journals, books and proceedings. Professor Sundén has also delivered several keynote and invited lectures and papers. He has been editor of twentyfour books published by international publishing houses. Four textbooks (one in Swedish, three in English) have been issued. Professor Sundén is involved in referee tasks for about forty international journals and has been active in several international and organising committees, boards etc. He initiated and was the first editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Heat Exchangers. He is also editor-in-chief for a book series, Developments in Heat Transfer. In addition, he is in the editorial board for another four journals. Professor Sundén is a fellow of ASME. From 2005-2008, he served as associate editor of the prestigeous ASME Journal of Heat Transfer. Since 2007 he serves as regional editor of the Journal of Enhanced Heat Transfer. He has achieved several international awards. In 2006 he was appointed honorary professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University, China.

From 1st July 2010 Professor Sundén serves on a three years term as associate editor of the ASME Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications.

Professor Sundén has supervised (at Chalmers and Lund University) 37 licentiate of Engineering theses and 32 doctoral (PhD) theses. Presently he is supervising 11 PhD students.
